1923 – 2020

Mark Bitterman, 96 died peacefully on May 4, 2020 at his home in Etters, PA with his wife of 73 years, Ethel Poorman Bitterman at his side.
He was born on June 29, 1923 to the late Hazel Adams Bitterman and Solomon Cyrus Bitterman. The family lived on Nectarine Street in the Allison Hill district of Harrisburg, and in 1939, the family moved to Colonial Park where they lived on Madison Street. Mark graduated from Lower Paxton Township High School in 1941.
Mark was involved in the Operation Overlord landing at Normandy in June 1944, where he was wounded. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart. He married Ethel Marie Poorman at Olivet Presbyterian Church in 1947.
He was a man of varied interests and began his professional career with Western Electric and, later, the Bell Telephone Company. He was employed as an analyst and efficiency expert for Bell and was involved in innovation and process improvement for the company. He was responsible for developing and implementing one of the first applications of computerized inventory control for the company while working at their office in King of Prussia. This involved transforming outmoded and fragmented inventory procedures to real time inventory numbers for the company. One of the major features of this project involved training the workforce in the importance of data entry.
In addition, he taught business writing and other subjects for the company in New York City. He retired from Bell Telephone.
Mark was an avid golfer from his youth and enjoyed bowling as well. He also loved fishing over the years, especially during a time living in Chincoteague, VA. Mark was a musician, played string bass in combos and loved all kinds of music from jazz and big-bands to classical. He also had an affinity for computers and all things technological.
He was a past president of CAPATUG which was a users group for Tandy computer owners and was fond of interacting with others on message boards in their early days and discussing political issues of the day. Photography was another of Mark’s many talents. He was listed in Who’s Who in American Photography and was a wedding and portrait photographer winning many prizes for his black and white images. Some of those images were hand color tinted by his wife, Ethel. He was a past president of the Harrisburg Camera Club.
In the 1960’s, Mark was one of the founding developers of the Valley Green Golf Course in Etters, PA. In his retirement he continued to golf and began to make custom golf clubs for friends and fellow golf aficionados. Mark was a member and past president of the Harrisburg Camera Club and the Bell Athletic Association, and a Lifetime Member of VFW Post 537 in Etters, where he was honored in last year’s Memorial Day Parade as the oldest World War II Veteran locally.
